Sleep can be one of the biggest challenges for a neurodivergent child and the family. Endless bedtimes, repeated night waking’s, early mornings and exhaustion can have a huge impact on the whole family. When everyone is running on empty, it can impact emotional wellbeing, daily routines, relationships and the ability to cope with everyday life.

What may look like a child who “just wont sleep”, is often a nervous system that is struggling to switch from alert to calm. Anxiety, sensory differences, the need for predictability and sleep-wake body regulation differences can all make it so much harder to fall asleep and stay asleep.

Sleep difficulties are extremely common in neurodivergent children, with up to 80% of autistic children experiencing sleep challenges, alongside 8/10 autistic children being affected by anxiety, which adds further sleep challenges. If your child struggles with sleep, it isn’t because you have done anything wrong, or because you’re “not strict enough”, their brain processes the world differently which can make settling at bedtime, falling asleep and staying asleep much more difficult.

Quality sleep plays a crucial role in your child’s development, supporting learning, memory, physical growth, emotional regulation, behaviour and overall wellbeing. Whilst sleep difficulties are common in neurodivergent children, they should not just be accepted as part of their diagnosis. With the right understanding and support, meaningful improvements are possible.

Every child is unique, which is why a one-size-fits-all approach rarely works. Sensory processing differences, anxiety, emotional regulation and communication needs can all influence sleep and traditional methods often don’t work, as the underlying issues are not addressed. An individualised, compassionate approach, that understands and works with your child’s nervous system and specific needs is far more effective and can lead to lasting improvements for not just your child, but for the whole family.
