Montessori & Sleep: Part 1

Supporting rest through connection, independence and environment

Sleep is not something we can force a child to do. Like all areas of development, sleep unfolds gradually, uniquely and in its own time. A Montessori-inspired approach to sleep focuses less on control and more on understanding-creating an environment that supports security, indpendence and emotional wellbeing.

Rather than asking “How do I make my child sleep?” Montessori gently encourages to ask: “What does my child need in order to feel safe, calm and ready for rest?”.

What is a Montessori Approach to Sleep?

Montessori principles are rooted in respect for the child as an individual. Sleep is viewed as a biological need, not a behaviour to fix. A Montessori-inspired sleep approach often focuses on: responsive connection, predictable rhythms, calm, prepared environments, encouraging independence gradually, respecting developmental readiness and following the childs cues where possible.

This does not mean there are no boundaries or routines. Instead, routines are built with collaboration, consistency and trust.
